Course Overview: ELEVATING WORK PLATFORM (EWP) OVER 11M

This unit specifies the outcomes required to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more) for licensing purposes, and involves the operation of a telescoping device, hinged device, or articulated device or any combination of these used to support a platform on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated to perform work. The 11 metre boom length shall be taken to mean the greater of the following:

(a) The vertical distance from the floor of the platform to the surface supporting the elevating work platform with the platform at its maximum height; or

(b) The nominal reach, measured horizontally from the centre point of rotation to the outer edge of the platform in its most extended position.

EWP Course Duration

EWP Ticket Course is a 3 day course.

EWP Licence Training Requirements

Students must be 18+ to complete a high risk course.

Students are required to demonstrate competency in numeracy, literacy, and communication skills at a Year 10 level.

Proficiency in spoken and written English language is required.

Dress Requirements

Long Sleeve Hi-Visibility Shirt (or Long Sleeve Shirt with a Hi-Visibility Vest), Long Pants, Steel Cap Safety Boots, Hard Hat, Safety Glasses (Optional).

EWP Course - FAQ

A boom-type elevating work platform is a type of aerial lift used to elevate workers and equipment to perform tasks at heights. It consists of a platform or bucket attached to an extendable arm (boom) that can be raised, lowered, and manoeuvred horizontally. The boom is typically mounted on a vehicle, such as a truck or trailer, for mobility.
You can start with EWP under 11m course if you like as this will give you some experience. However if you want to go straight to the high risk course the trainer goes through everything in class. If the first time you complete the course and you don’t pass you get a second chance on the next course available.
Your training will be divided up into two parts firstly theory wish is a closed book test, it is recommended to study the learner guide the night before. Once that is completed and passed you will then be required to do a practical.
You will have the opportunity to retry until you are competent and work ready!
Yes refunds are available if you cancel your training before starting the course.
EWP over 11m ticket lasts 5 years on a high risk card. To keep it in date you need to apply for another card before it expires.

The Yellow Card Training Program has been designed for people needing to develop the skills and knowledge required to operate Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (commonly known as EWPs). The course will provide training in the safe use of various types of elevated work platforms including boom type EWPs with boom length under 11 metres. Participants may complete singular or multiple modules, depending on the type of EWP they will be operating.

Modules include

  • Vertical Lift (VL)
  • Scissor Lift (SL)
  • Self Propelled Boom Lift (BL)
  • Trailer Lift (TL)
  • Truck Mounted Lift (TM)
  •  Advanced Boom (AB)
The operator of the scissor lift is required by Regulations to be trained in its safe operation. The Yellow Card is an industry driven training program that provides the holder with evidence of training in a particular type of EWP.
You are required to have the high risk work licence if you are working above 11m

After passing the course you will receive via email a Candidate Assessment Summary form from work place health and safety then you can apply for a HRWL or add a new licence class on an existing HRWL, at worksafe.qld.gov.au using the online services drop down menu.

An EWP ticket doesn’t specifically cover working at heights: this is a separate course. Naturally, working on an elevating work platform means you’ll be working at height at times, however getting your EWP license won’t automatically cover you for height safety work in different types of applications.
There are various types of EWP, including: scissor lifts. self-propelled boom lifts. trailer or vehicle mounted lifts.

This Course is a 3 day course.

Students will learn to operate an elevated work platform (EWP) in a safe and efficient manner. The course will include the following:

  • ​Plan work
  • Conduct machine preoperational checks
  • Set up elevated work platform
  • Operate elevated work platform
  • Shut down and secure elevated work platform

Your training will be divided up into two parts firstly theory and once that is completed a practical section.

Upon successful completion of the unit a Statement of Attainment will be issued. Participants will receive an email from WHS with their CAS application. They will have 60 days to apply for their high-risk licence.
