Construction Journey Interview with Brock Bunter

Brocks Civil Construction Journey (machine operator)

It was a pleasure doing a short interview with Brock Bunter, a young hard-working high school leaver, who has a very bright future in the construction Industry.

Brock first came to Diggerman two years ago, after completing year 12 to begin a Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations.

He started our ‘CIVIL START Course’ with a number of other Coolum High Students who wanted to leave school with a headstart and the skills required to work within the Civil Construction industry.

Our Civil Start course is an ideal start to anyone wanting to enter the Construction industry and is an affordable package of all the courses that will set you on the fast track to employment.

We cater to high school students and / or adults looking to change careers or enter the construction industry.

Today’s interview shows how far Brock has come in those two short years..

  1. What do you remember about the course you started?

I remember we were sick of school and enjoyed our new classroom in a donga and being around all this cool machinery. We really enjoyed our trainer Dan who taught us heaps.

  1. Where did you land your first job?

I was offered a job with Fencepac as a trainee where I got to continue my Certificate III in Civil  Construction Plant Operations.

  1. What type of work do you do and where have you worked?

I do general labouring but also get to opportunities to get on Excavators and our Cat 279 skid steer, mostly Augering holes, ramming, levelling and back filliing on a number of different job sites from Solar farms out at West Wandoan, Miles or putting up noise barriers near Gosford or up North in Cairns on the Smithfield by-pass. I also enjoy operating the EWP at some pretty high spots.

One really interesting job was putting in a Noise barrier on a Army base where they do underground weapons testing.

  1. What are some of the great things you like about the Civil/Construction industry?

I love the chance to travel and get paid for it.  I have been able to save money.

My employer Fencepac has given me the opportunity to gain so many licences and some are with Queensland Rail.

I am always learning new skills. I will be starting my Doggers course in 2 weeks.

I get the opportunity to operate machinery with my tickets.

  1. What advice would you give to anyone wishing to get into the Civil/Construction industry?

Have a go and see if this is for you.

Work hard, be reliable, trust in yourself, back your training and opportunities are endless.
